Can the music industry help save the print industry? Well its worth the shot. As we all now, Vibe magazine announced they’ve closed their doors as of last month. The magazine/print market has been on a steady decline as the world wide web has become more accessible to readers. More and more magazines are facing problems trying to not only maintain but make profit from sales that are just not there.
With that in mind, Island Def Jam has announced that they will be the first ever record label to have advertising inserts inside their CD liner notes. Basically based on an artist’s potential sales, Def Jam collabo’s with magazines that would target the consumer group purchasing the album.
Who better to experiment with this project than Mariah Carey. With her first single rising on the charts, album sales are expected to be in the millions.
‘Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel,’ which is slated for a September 15 release. The insert “is a 34-page co-production with Elle Magazine that includes lifestyle ads from Elizabeth Arden, Angel Champagne, Carmen Steffens, Le MZtier de BeautZ and the Bahamas Board of Tourism,” writes Becky Ebenkamp in Brandweek.
L.A. Reid, the company’s president and CEO stated :
“It’s always a bit scary when multiple struggling industries collaborate in order to save each other, but Def Jam is thinking this idea could be huge. “My artists have substantial circulation — when you sell 2 million, 5 million, 8 million, that’s a lot of eyeballs. Most magazines aren’t as successful as those records.”
With Mariah’s controversial first single, Obsessed, not even reaching the number 1,2 or 3 spot on billboards, can Def Jam really estimate she’ll be selling millions? Will the 34 page layout be a hit or miss? Personally I think this is a good venture to save print but whether or not it’ll jack the price of the albums has nto yet been states, I guess we’ll have to wait and see. -Ciao
